Fado music is a form of Portuguese singing that is often associated with pubs, cafés, and restaurants. This music genre officially originated in Portugal around the 1820s, though it is thought to have much earlier origins. Fado is known for how expressive and profoundly melancholic it is.

Fado is Portugal’s musical pride and is considered one of the country’s national treasures. It is a musical genre that hides the history of Lisbon and Coimbra and is the most recognized music of Portugal.

Fado Is Portugal’s main traditional music and is a form of song which can encompass anything and everything but is mainly characterised by mournful and melancholy tunes and lyrics. In 2011, Fado was added to UNESCO’s Representative List of the Intangible Cultural Heritage of Humanity.

The musics of these dance traditions merged with the modinha, ultimately giving birth to fado. The popularization of fado in the 1830s is widely attributed to Maria Severa, a tavern singer in the Alfama district and the first famous fadista (singer of fado).
