Act 1 is where we see Macbeth make the decision to murder King Duncan – he is tempted by supernatural prophecies, his own ambition, the words of his wife and an unexpected opportunity.

At the king’s palace, Duncan hears reports of Cawdor’s execution from his son Malcolm, who says that Cawdor died nobly, confessing freely and repenting of his crimes.

Macbeth’s fatal flaw in the play is his Unchecked ambition, an unabated desire for power and position, namely to be king, which is more important to him than anything else in life. He is willing to give up everything that he has in his life in order to possess the crown to sit on the throne.

In Act 1, Scene 2 of Macbeth, a wounded officer brings King Duncan news of Macbeth’s bravery in battle. The tone of the play is Fatalistic, creating the sense that the natural world has been thrown out of order by Macbeth’s unnatural ascension to the throne. Violence or the possibility of violence exists throughout, and there are very few light or playful moments.

Later His wife, Lady Macduff, was murdered by Macbeth. Macduff encourages Duncan’s son Malcolm to return from England to Scotland to take the throne from Macbeth. Upon returning to Scotland, Macduff confronts Macbeth and kills him.

Macbeth is portrayed as a tragic hero, someone who has it all at first but decides to give it all up. Throughout the story the waste of potential, the waste of life and finally the waste of innocence are just some of the types of wastes that can be found, but they are enough to prove the theory.

Macbeth Feels guilty and hears noises and voices and even starts halluctioning. At one point before the murder, he sees a bloodied dagger pointing to Duncan’s bedchamber. Lady Macbeth is calm, cool, and collected and orders her husband to wash up.

In this scene, we meet Macbeth for the first time. The witches gather on the moor and cast a spell as Macbeth and Banquo arrive. The witches hail Macbeth first by his title Thane of Glamis, then as Thane of Cawdor and finally as king. They then prophesy that Banquo’s children will become kings.

Macbeth goes from being a loyal and honorable soldier to a murderer and traitor. At the beginning of act 1 we hear him being described as ‘valiant’, ‘brave’ and ‘noble’. Duncan, the king is so impressed by his nobility and bravery that he proclaims Macbeth the ‘Thane of Cawdor’.

In Act 1, Scene 4 of Macbeth, King Duncan is informed of the noble execution of the former Thane of Cawdor for treason. He then greets Macbeth and Banquo and thanks them both for their loyal and brave service. Macbeth and Banquo pledge their loyalties to the King.

At the end of the play, Macbeth’s severed head is brought to Malcolm by Macduff, proof that Macbeth has been overthrown, and that Scotland is now Malcom’s to rule. Malcolm promises rewards to all who have fought for him, and names them all earls, the first in Scotland.
