What does it mean when an account is deactivated?

Your account, profile, photos, videos, comments, likes and followers will be permanently removed. You can’t sign up again with the same username or add that username to another account. Deleted accounts cannot be reactivated.

If you can see their pic but the message box is disabled then it means that you have been blocked. However, if the person has not blocked you but left Facebook by deactivating their account then obviously you cannot message or visit their profile similar to blocking.

MacDonald tells us that deactivated accounts’ profiles and profile photos “will still be visible on your friend’s list, although you can’t click on them anymore. Someone who has blocked you won’t show up at all.”
