What does it mean to be c-tpat certified?

C-TPAT stands for customs trade partner against terrorism. A company becomes C-TPAT certified when it has gone through training, established security protocols, and demonstrated that it can comply with guidelines set by the United States Customs and Border Protection Group.

The C-TPAT SVI function is accessed via the C-TPAT Security Link Portal found on the CBP web site. Access is available in the C-TPAT Security Link Portal for C-TPAT Partners who meet the criteria to be Status Verification Interface Participants (SVIP).

In general, there are three steps to C-TPAT certification:

1. Risk Assessment. The C-TPAT candidate conducts and fully documents a security risk assessment.
2. Application. The company then submits a basic application via the C-TPAT portal system.
3. Security Profile.

For an importer to be eligible to join CTPAT, it must: Be an active US importer or non-resident Canadian importer that has imported goods into the US within the past 12 months. Have an active US importer of record (IOR) number. Have a valid continuous import bond registered with CBP.

How long does it take to be CTPAT certified? CTPAT partners agree to implement a set of minimum-security criteria and be certified and validated by the CBP agency. The process begins online at cbp.gov. and usually takes 9 months to a year To complete.

CBP does not C-TPAT certify third-party warehouses. However, CBP has agreed to endorse a Warehouse Security Best Practice Guideline for third party warehouses.
