What are straight barbell piercings used for?

Straight barbells are most commonly worn in tongue piercings. Though, they’re also worn in many other piercings (e.g. eyebrow, industrial, nipple, etc.). With tongue and genital piercings, heavy gauge barbells are often used.

The length of your first barbell will likely be 7/16-inch to allow for extra room for your piercings to heal and be easily cleaned. You can change the size later. (Belly button piercings almost always use 7/16-inch or 3/8-inch jewelry.)

If you don’t have a solid flap of skin on the top of the belly button, sometimes piercers can go for the lower lip of the belly button instead (though this is a rare option). Unfortunately, if you have an Outie belly button, you most likely won’t be able to get it pierced.

BARBELL VS LABRET

The choice between labret or barbell usually comes down to personal preference. There are however some piercing locations where a labret is usually recommended, such as tragus and forward helix piercings.
