Do lipids have subunits?

Lipids have more carbon and hydrogen atoms than oxygen atoms. Fats are made of a glycerol (alcohol) and three fatty acid chains. This subunit is called a triglyceride. The fatty acid chains may be saturated (only single bonds between carbons) or unsaturated (contain at least one double bond).

The classes of biological molecules may be grouped into the types of polymers they form and the Monomers That act as subunits: Lipids – polymers called diglycerides, triglycerides; monomers are glycerol and fatty acids.

Lipids are made up of glycerol and fatty acids with a long chain hydrocarbon. Triglycerides are the most common type of fats. They have three fatty acids attached to one glycerol molecule.

The human fatty acid synthase (FAS; EC 2.3. 1.85), like other animal synthases, catalyzes the synthesis of long-chain fatty acids from acetyl-CoA, malonyl-CoA, and NADPH. The native enzyme has a molecular weight of 544,000 and is composed of Two identical subunit proteins (1, 2).

The Monosaccharides (mono = one, saccharide = sugar) are the basic subunits of carbohydrates.

The building blocks of proteins are Amino acids, which are small organic molecules that consist of an alpha (central) carbon atom linked to an amino group, a carboxyl group, a hydrogen atom, and a variable component called a side chain (see below).

For example, proteins are composed of monomers called Amino acids. They are linked together to form a polypeptide chain, which folds into a three dimensional (3D) structure to constitute a functional protein (Figure 1).

Of the Nine protein subunits, seven of the proteins are highly basic with isoelectric points (pI) greater than 9, Pop8p is the only acidic protein with a pI of 4.5, whereas Pop5p has a pI of 7.7.

Lipids are nonpolar molecules, which means their ends are not charged. Because they are nonpolar and water is polar, lipids are not soluble in water. That means the lipid molecules and water molecules do not bond or share electrons in any way. The lipids just float in the water without blending into it.

A fat molecule consists of two main components: Glycerol and fatty acids.

A nucleotide Is a subunit of DNA or RNA that consists of a nitrogenous base (A, G, T, or C in DNA; A, G, U, or C in RNA), a phosphate molecule, and a sugar molecule (deoxyribose in DNA, and ribose in RNA).
